History of Lalbagh Fort

The Lalbagh Fort was started in 1678 by Mughal prince Muhammad Azam Shah during his vice-royalty in Bengal, but it remained incomplete when he had to leave. The new Subahdar of Dhaka, Shaista Khan, did not complete it either, partly due to the death of his daughter in the fort, which he considered unlucky. After Shaista Khan left Dhaka, the fort lost its popularity and was abandoned after the end of the royal Mughal period. The area was renamed Lalbagh in 1844, and the fort became known as Lalbagh Fort.
