History

The plans for the monument began in 1976. Savar was chosen as the main site, located about 35 km northwest of Dhaka. In June 1978, a nationwide design competition was held. Out of 57 submissions, Syed Mainul Hossain’s design was selected.

Architecture

The monument’s design features seven pairs of triangular walls. The outermost pair is the shortest and widest. The inner pairs get taller and narrower as they move inward, with the innermost pair forming the peak. Each pair of walls symbolizes a key event in Bangladesh’s history: the 1952 Bengali language movement, the 1954 United Front election victory, the 1956 Constitution Movement, the 1962 East Pakistan Education movement, the 1966 six-point movement, the 1969 mass uprising, and the 1971 Liberation War.
